Welcome back to our blog; and with the weather finally beginning to ease, but the ground too boggy to dig or plant, it is time to take a look at any existing trees and shrubs in your garden or outdoor area. In Warwickshire we are mainly on clay, which is full of nutrients and a great soil type for most trees, hedges and shrubs, but it does drain slowly so can take a while to recover from the rainfall we have experienced.
Any deciduous, (non- evergreen), trees, hedges and shrubs will be looking like skeletons so it is much easier to assess whether they are the shape you want, and the health of individual branches and limbs. Now is the perfect time to consider how you want your tree or shrub to grow, if it is in the right place and whether it is blocking out light or being overshadowed.
For most trees and shrubs, they prefer to have good air circulation, which means that the branches should not be tangled together. Any branches that rub against each other or anything else are a potential source of disease and need removing. With no leaves to obscure your view it is much easier to see how to trim and train the tree or shrub that is probably a focal point of your space.
