Mow your lawn

Depending on where you live, the aspect, the soil and amount of light, your lawn will have started to recover from the heat and drought of the summer. It is almost the end of the grass growing season, so if your lawn needs it, the ground is hard enough and the grass dry enough, give your grass a final mow. If possible mulch mow, so the clippings can give nutrients to the soil, and set your blades a little higher to leave a good covering of grass for the winter.

Sort out your pots and and summer bedding plants

Most summer bedding is hanging on, maybe with a few flowers still, but really coming to the end of its life. You know the first frost will kill the plants, turning them black and unsightly. Spring bulbs and autumn flowering plants are available now, so say goodbye to summer and get planting for winter and spring colour.

Prepare your permanent planting for winter.

If you have any climbers with branches swaying in the breezes, cut them back to help the plant withstand the stronger winter winds. Gales that catch swaying branches can uproot the whole plant so tie in what you want to keep and prune what you do not. If you have fruit trees, and roses, you will want prune these in mid winter, but do consider a light trim now to help them withstand incoming weather.
