The clue is in the name- Summer Pruning is a job for now!
What is summer Pruning?
At the most basic it is trimming plants to the shape you want now. It is particularly useful to summer prune fruit and ornamental trees and large shrubs.
Many trees and large shrubs send out long thin branches in spring, sometimes known as water spouts. Usually growing vertically and very leafy they hide fruit from the sun and take energy away from the developing fruits too.
Pruning these back tidies your garden, restores your views, keeps the plants the size you want. It also helps the plant put its energy into making strong branches and good sized fruit.
Usually these shoots are thin and flexible, easy to cut with secateurs. However, with big trees they may be too high to reach safely, Chopwell can help. A day or half day of our friendly professional team can reshape your trees, hedges, offer advice and if time help you tidy your garden too.
Other plants to prune and shape
Birds have finished nesting so if you have a hedge looking untidy you can prune that now, along with bay trees and other shrubs. There is a lot of advice on websites such as RHS on when and how to prune trees and shrubs. However, as a rule, if it is getting too big or too leggy, Chopwell can help you get your garden back under control!
Climbers
Climbing plants such as wisteria and honeysuckle have gone mad recently, sending out masses of shoots and tendrils. To stop them taking over your garden, tie in the stems you want where you want them and cut back the rest, particularly the long wispy growths that seem to reach out and lasso plants near by.
Keep Climbing roses safe and under control by tying in, deadheading and cutting back. The recent strong winds reminded us of the damage wind can do, ripping off branches and damaging plants.
If you have clematis, do check what type it is and tie it in, pruning depends on variety.
