Colourful Spring is on its way. The bubs are showing and some are already flowering.
Colourful Spring started with the snowdrops back in late January and now we are moving on to crocus, daffodils, hellebores primroses and violets. All a sure sign that winter is on the way out!
The Chopwell team love looking at everyone’s gardens as we go about our work of clearing and pruning trees and shrubs, cutting hedges (but not now as the birds are starting to nest) and general garden maintenance.
In our opinion, to achieve a colourful spring, make sure you have clumps and drifts of spring bulbs rather than single stems dotted about. Over time bulbs will divide and make bigger clumps, so this is the time of year to make decisions.
Have you the right amount of the right spring colours in the right place?
By the time spring bulbs are back in the garden centres in late summer it is difficult to remember what you have already and whether they are in the right place. Act now to make your garden colourful next spring. Take photos to remind yourself where the bulbs are and where you would like them to be. Look out of your windows, can you see spring colour without having to go outside?
Too many or in the wrong place
Take photos and put sticks to mark the areas where you need to make a change. Once bulbs die back, lift, and dry them, discarding any soft diseased bulbs, and replant in late summer in the place you want them.
Lone flowers needing friends
Take photos and mark the area where you want more spring colour, so you can plant new bulbs in the autumn.
Spring flowers like hellebore, primula and primrose may set seed and produce new plants after flowering. Gardeners love to share, and you may be able to swap plants to give your garden a more colourful spring.
