As we work throughout Warwickshire, we want to encourage all our clients and everyone who takes the trouble to read this blog, to make some small changes that can have a big impact on the wildlife that calls your garden their home.
Provide habitat
Somewhere to live, somewhere to shelter. Wildlife Friendly Gardens offer habitat. This includes hedges and larger plants for birds to perch and nest in. Bird boxes and bug hotels to encourage wildlife to stay. The RSPB is full of advice and there are many businesses making bird boxes to suit lots of native species.
Birds, animals and bugs like their privacy too. Try to leave places for them to hide, to see but not be seen, to shelter without being constrained
If you can leave a small wild or messy area in your garden with leaves, dead wood and weeds this will encourage wildlife too.
Provide water
Wildlife needs water, to drink, bathe in and for some species to breed and escape into. A pond in a dustbin lid or old washing up bowl can be enough. Do ensure there are rocks and pebbles to allow creatures to make a way in and out of the water. In summer, water in small ponds can evaporate very quickly, please check and refill (preferably rainwater) as required.
Provide food
Bird feeders encourage our native species to visit. Keep feeders topped up to keep the birds coming. A wide variety of plants provide food and shelter for bugs, which in turn encourages birds and small creatures.
Keep it natural
The fewer chemicals we put on our plants and soil the more wildlife friendly garden we create. Recycling, reusing and composting all help to make our patch a wildlife friendly garden. Warwickshire Recycling facebook page is full of ideas
